Is Radio doomed?
By Mad Macs
Does Radio stand a chance?
I listen to Bob & Tom every morning on my way to work. I drive 40 miles and I'm in the car almost an hour each morning. I don't mind the drive itself as it's mostly highway. I like listening to the radio as I commute daily.
When I get to work, I take out my iPhone, plug it into my speakers in my office and continue listening to Bob & Tom. How? I have an application (I Heart Radio) on the iPhone that streams radio stations via either the cellular network or a wifi connection. Sounds good, right? Now, sometimes I have to drive several hours to work (I do onsite Mac support for a living). As I get out of the city, I lose the radio. Guess what, I fire up my iPhone 3G, launch I Heart Radio, and continue listening to Bob & Tom.
Aside from the data cost associated with the iPhone 3G, I have $0 cost in this solution. I Heart Radio is free, I have no extra data charges associated with streaming, and life is good.
The only potential issue is cell reception availability. No reception, no streaming radio.
